The Class:

German Longsword KDF

Study and practice historical European longsword in the German tradition of Liechtenauer. Training draws from period fencing manuals and is practiced through drilling, partnered exercises, and controlled fencing.

Classes cover the core guards and cuts, how to strike, defend, and return from them, and how to link actions together in simple exchanges. Students work through structured partner drills to develop timing, distance, and initiative, and begin applying these ideas under increasing pressure through guided fencing and sparring.

Mitchell Edward German longsword HEMA instructor

The Instructor:

Mitchell Edward is a Liechtenauer Fundamentalist Longsword Fencer. He learned quickly and early in his fencing endeavours. Starting in 2019, visiting and attending multiple clubs from Niagara to Grimsby, Hamilton and Toronto. His focus and enjoyment in fencing sit squarely on the fundamental building blocks of the Liechtenauer system and its modular mechanics.

The vast majority of his experience comes from attending the S.O.H.F.A (Southern Ontario Historical Fencing Association) from 2019 to 2022. He repeated the introductory class and advanced program several times, assisting with coaching and teaching newcomers, mutually learning with his fellow weekly students over a period of three years.

Beyond fencing, he has a passion for traditional and contemporary Artisan Blacksmithing, making steel flowers, insects, birds and all sorts of unique items. He is a trained and practiced illustrator and creative artist. As different as his passions are, bringing the care and disciplines together as communal art forms is his goal in all endeavours.
